Alentejo Wine Region

Duration: 6 Days & 5 Nights

A visit to the Alentejo region is like stepping into the past, to a time before cities, where ages old quiet rolling countrysides of wheat, olive trees, vineyards and cork tree groves are the rule. Here the food, like the pace, is anything but fast, with tasty delicacies like aged cheeses, and ham produced from the black-footed pigs that devour the acorns falling from the region’s oak trees. It’s also the seat of the world’s cork production, still harvested by hand at the same slow pace that’s been followed for generations. We’ll follow house rules and unwind at one luxurious hotel for the course of our vacation, guaranteed to put you where you want to be without a lot of work, and with a lot of relaxation. Plus, on select dates, choose to indulge in daily yoga classes with our local Yogascapes certified instructor. From delectable meals to Roman temples in towns like Evora, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where city walls and ruins of Roman baths still remain, this is where time stands still, and the hustle, bustle and busyness of everyday life are long forgotten.

Day 1 Ride through vineyard-lined roads to Terenan

Welcome to Portugal! You’ll arrive at your luxurious retreat deep in the Alentejo Region after a two-hour shuttle ride. Settle in and make yourself at home and enjoy a light lunch at the hotel terrace highlighting the local specialties: soft, light sheep cheeses (from sheep we pass on our rides) and black ham are your introductions to the Alentejo palate. Your guides will fit and familiarize you with your bike and riding for the week. Then, it’s off on our first adventure through vineyard-lined roads to Terena, a lovely small village, located in an area of quietness, close to the river and nearby the border with Spain. During the Middle Age, this village had an important defensive role, as its Castle still proves, integrating the Guadiana river defensive line. The streets of Terena are characterized by its lovely typical Alentejo’s architecture, with small colorful houses. Explore the village and enjoy picturesque views before heading back to Vila Vicoca. This evening, you’ll have the option to join in a welcome circle and restorative yoga flow before enjoying a welcome drink of local Alentejo wines followed by dinner at the hotel’s renowned restaurant, Narcissus Fernandesii, which freshens classic Portuguese dishes, like the flaky cod miga, to contemporary tastes with locally sourced ingredients.

Then, we’ll take our bikes and ride through gently rolling countryside noted for producing high-quality wines toward Evora, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. You’ll pass by its impressive 16th-century aqueduct, then take an expert-led walking tour with a local guide to the Temple of Diana, an ancient Roman temple dating back to the first century and the town’s most famous landmark. We will finish our tour at the bone chapel, perhaps one of the most memorable monuments of Evora, where the walls are lined with bones of the long-deceased, exhumed from the city’s graves as the city expanded to allow further burials. Enjoy lunch on your own and take your time to explore a maze of perfectly maintained cobbled streets with traditionally painted houses. A variety of delightful shops provide a great opportunity to buy presents and souvenirs. Or maybe you’re after a fresh rack of lamb, accompanied by migas, which are bread crumbs in their most royal posture, accompanied by asparagus into a light cake.
